Cammalocks' magic touch

At last I made it to London for my retightening appointment on 19 February. I was glad to see Marie after three months of no professional retightening. I wondered what she would say about the condition of my locks after assessing them. The worst case scenario would be her telling me to go for the big chop and start all over again; but thank goodness she didn’t think my locks were beyond repair. In fact only a few of them needed particular attention.

I had a few limp locks in front that were definitely on the verge of breakage but Marie expertly bonded them back together. I was beside myself when she handed me a mirror to show me what she’d done. She even went as far as merging two locks into one at root level and then snipped off one lock and used it to create a new lock from a cluster of new growth about an inch long. The result of my retightened locks was absolutely wonderful; they looked as good as new – all of them. Marie had done a fantastic job.

Seriously if anyone's looking for a real good consultant try Marie and I promise you, you will not be disappointed.

Am real pleased with my locks now, and I no longer have issues with dandruff and dry scalp. Every day of watching my locks develop and change, increase in volume and length is quite interesting and exciting.

Thanks Marie for transforming me into a beautiful African princess.

What's the colour of my hair?

For the moment there's nothing much I can do about the colour of my hair. It's not coloured or anything, but the ends have taken on a dirty dull brown colour and it's worse after I shampoo. I do put a little olive oil after I wash just to give it a little shine. Am hoping that my hair locks quickly so that I can colour it black. But in the meantime, I have to live with my natural colour.

There are days when I look at my locks and they look oh so lovely, and then they're other days when they look horrid. But perhaps it's more my mood and nothing to do with my locks.

February a memorable month

Am not sure about the exact date, but it was a day this month last year, when I first went to London for consultation with Marie on microlocks. That trip was the start of my journey and it was the most important because it was the determining factor as to whether or not I was going ahead with my decision to loc my hair.

In my family we do a lot of justifying and answering to a lot of whys. I remember worrying about my family’s reaction, but I had done my homework and prepared well on how I was going to elevate natural hair and sisterlocking. I knew that not everyone of them would like it but I needed most of them on my side. So I filled them in on sisterlocks. I sent them web links on sisterlocks and journeys with lots of pictures. And I needed to make them understand that I was not doing dreadlocks, and dreads are not bad, BUT in the society that I grew up in, dreads would cause a stir in my family especially my mum. Anyway, I got the family blessing and they now take keen interest in how my locks are developing. So if I want as many family members to taste this freedom of natural hair and locks, it’s important that I have a beautiful head of locks.

Salon Bio (organic fair)

Last Saturday I went to the salon de bio at Port de Pantin. I had lots of health problems in the past so these days am always on the hunt for healthy body building foods.

I noticed that most black people I came across had natural hair or dreads. Natural hair = natural way of living. I didn't see anyone with sisterlocks - so I was quite unique but since I had my hair tied back, no one noticed my microlocks. Anywayz.

I got myself lots of organic grains like mixed wild rice, quinoa, bulgar rice, couscous, soja. And I got some cheese, cremant, wine, herbal teas, apple cidar vinegar etc - all organic and at resonable prices. My bag was heavy but I didn't mind coz I was buring calories!

Seems like the in thing these days are Goji berries (wolf berries), from the Himalayas. So many people were filling their bags with Gojis. When I first came across Goji's last spring, they were going for 60 euros a kilo. I refused to buy them and instead got a Chinese friend to send me some and they only cost about 3 euros for a kilo! But this time I noticed the prices had dropped and they were affordable.

It was my exercise weekend with no to invitations; but just as I was leaving the fair, my phone rang and friends who live not too far from Port de Pantin invited me to their place. I didn't even think to say no and how could I when I have a lion's appetite! I dashed back and got a bottle of cremant and went to dinner. My friends had prepared the most delicious homemade sausage rolls, followed by a chicken and veggie meal, and then dessert. It was well balanced meal but since I'd broken my vow, the little devlish voice was bugging me about the calories. Anywayz I enjoyed my food and the good company.

Go Goji: They are packed with very high level of antioxidants, as well as relatively high levels of some important vitamins and minerals. Some health benefits include a reduction in blood pressure and cholesterol. It is also thought to be helpful in preventing cancer due to the high levels of antioxidants. The berries help to improve immune function since the antioxidants deal with a some of the free radicals that might otherwise cause diseases. Voilà.

3 kilos on

I got onto the scale this morning - I weigh 58.5 kilos. Good grief tha's not good at all. I usually weigh 55 kilos with the scale hardly ever moving anywhere close to 56. So am thinking what on earth has caused the extra unwanted 3 kilos? Not the wine, coz I drink less these days but maybe I have been eating a little more than usual, binging here and there and I haven't been exercising every day. This means, lots of exercising this weekend and no treats - aaarggghhh!

58 kilos is actually the right weight for my height and age - over 40, but I want to maintain my figure and small waist. People often say that once you cross 40 you're damned with a soft barrel or love handles. I crossed 40 a while ago and so far am still the same and I plan to stay that way for as long as I can. I guess the secret is to watch what you eat and lots of exercise. But I understand how food can get in the way. Sometimes we eat even when we're not hungry.

At lunch, with a couple of girlfriends we had nshima (an African staple food), with chicken, beans, cabagge, mashed beans and corn, smoked salmon, wine, followed by a rasberry tart and some cheese. Huh, that was a calorific meal.

What do you do after a huge meal? You drink a glass of water with one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar (ACV) - you could sweeten it with a teasspoon of honey - or you could use lemon instead of ACV. And ofcourse there are several herbal teas like camomile and mint tea. After a meal like that go home in the evening to do strenuous exercises for about an hour and then I eat a light no carb meal.

So this weekend will be dedicated to exercise and NO to lunch or dinner invitations.
